The 153 Fish
There is an interesting verse when Jesus told his apostles to cast the net to the side of their ship. They pulled up 153 Fish. When you think about it, it's kind of strange that they would give an exact number. Why not something like we pulled up a large quantity of fish or a ballpark figure like "over one hundered fish"? Below is the verse and some simple research on this mysterious number. I'm only helping point out some things of interest, I'm not saying there is any truth to this matter only that it's interesting.
John 21:7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt [his] fisher's coat [unto him], (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea. John 21:8 And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes. John 21:9 As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread. John 21:10 Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught. John 21:11 Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken. John 21:11(BGT) ἀνέβη οὖν Σίμων Πέτρος καὶ εἵλκυσεν τὸ δίκτυον εἰς τὴν γῆν μεστὸν ἰχθύων μεγάλων ἑκατὸν πεντήκοντα τριῶν· καὶ τοσούτων ὄντων οὐκ ἐσχίσθη τὸ δίκτυον.
Is Gematria Occult?
So by casting this "Net" are we catching "sons of God"? That is the thinking behind Gematria which is the numerical assignments to each letter of both the Hebrew and Greek alphabets. This of course would mean the Greek and Hebrew numeric systems are some how interrelated as "Sons of God" is the Hebrew calculation and that thought line is being mixed with the Greek calculation from above. Something funny to me is that when I was creating my NumberMan web site, the dot com was already taken so I settled for dot Net. Probably happened for a reason as it's my web site on religious topics in a digital NET. As far as the use of Gematria, Papyrus 115 uses just 3 letters to contain a value adding up to 616. This is the oldest known fragment of Revelation. If Gematria is implied and this is the oldest rendering, were early writers into the Occult as some view the process of Gematria? It's always possible that it is an occult practice, but that is up to oneself to discover. I have decided to leave this information here, but have removed my Gematria Calculators from my website. I haven't found enough convincing arguments for there being hidden gematria meanings within the Bible. The Textus Receptus rendering of Revelation 13:18 uses 3 letters indicating a Gematria value.
The next verse uses a multiple of 153 when referring to "the net" within the same set of verses.
John 21:6 He said to them, "Cast The Net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish. Το
Δικτυον The Net does indeed total 153x8=1224 I originally thought this was pretty neat to see, the only problem is this number can be broken even further down like this: 1224 = 2x2x2x3x3x17 which is less impressive then seeing 153 in the equation.
In Luke 9:13 there is a word for Fish ιχθυες this totals to 1224 or 153x8 which can also be broken down to 2x2x2x3x3x17 as well but it does indeed have a multiple of 153.
Here are the Fish words that don't = 153 or multiples of 153. If Gematria was implied, why do they have so many words for fish with no numeric connections?
Ιχθυων = Fish - Strong's # 02486 (Greek) 10+600+9+400+800+50 = 1869
Ιχθυας = Fish - Strong's # 02486 (Greek) 10+600+9+400+1+200 = 1220
Ιχθυς = Fish - Strong's # 02486 (Greek) 10+600+9+400+200 = 1219
Ιχθυν = Fish - Strong's # 02486 (Greek) 10+600+9+400+50=1069
דגה = Fish - Strong's # 01710 (Hebrew) 4+3+5 = 12
